Meraki in the Wild
Hallway Drawing
Pride
Pride
This piece illustrates a corner of the school’s main hallways. The intersection of the two different walls provides a variety of shape and value. The setting takes place in broad daylight, as the viewer can see from the reflective floors and highlights. There is emphasis on the pop of color in the flag, which contrasts the black and white of the pencil and charcoal. Within the flag there is movement from the darker and thicker sections of the stripes to create waves. Every day I walk by this area, I notice the large flag against the white walls. I thought the color pop of the flag stood for not only the pride of my school, but my country.

Still Life
Still Life
This picture depicts a ceramic piece, wine bottle, and mannequin head. The bottle was smooth and reflective, to the light shining on it strongly contrasts with the rest of the dark bottle. The string lights running across the picture add texture. The lights also cast shadows on the ceramic piece. The shape of the objects are different because the MTV has a sharp, angular shape, while the other two main objects are rounded and smooth. The variety of charcoal weights provides a distinction of light and color. While this subject matter is not personal to me, my style of illustrating the scene is unique.

Charcoal Project
Shady
The girl pictured is looking up above her glasses. A reflection is shown most prominently in her eyeball and glasses. The variety of charcoal weights used in this piece add contrast between the different elements of the image. There is a darker value to her red lips and dark lenses adding emphasis to these features. The soft lines of her hair break the defined form of the glasses. Her eye is bright white compared to the darkness of her skin.

Pen and Ink Project
Chance the Rapper
In this picture, I drew Chance the Rapper in pen and ink with a variety of techniques. My main style was making ink washed of different values to capture the darks and lights of the picture. I rarely used a ballpoint pen or the ink nib. The contrast in the shadow of his face was interesting to depict because I wanted to capture the sharpness of the shadow but keep the smooth blend of color on his face. I added a pattern of text in the background because I liked the crisp, linear words against the washed form of the subject. One of my best memories was going to a Chance the Rapper concert so I thought this was meaningful to me.

Colored Pencil Project
Smurf Sherbet
My work is based off a picture of me holding pineapple dole whip ice cream in Disney World. I thought that with such bright colored pencils and a bright photo, I could use the element of surrealism to switch things up a bit. My piece is very colorful and uses lines to draw the focus to the subject of the picture. There is a repeated pattern of swirls between the background and the ice cream. I think that the complementary spiral patterns bring a sense of rhythm to the piece. While this was done completely in colored pencil, rubbing alcohol was used to blend the ombre green tones in the background. Between the fun memories and the fun colors of the work, it fits my personality and has a personal relevance to me.
